Why Fiji?

Fiji is an island country located in the South of the Pacific Ocean, approximately 1,300 miles northeast of New Zealand. In addition to its natural beauty and friendly locals, Fiji offers a wide range of activities and experiences to suit all interests. From exploring the coral reefs and swimming with sharks to hiking through lush rain forests and visits traditional villages, there's always something new to discover. The food in Fiji is also a highlight, with fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and traditional Fijian cuisine on offer. Whether you're looking for adventure or relaxation, Fiji should be on your list of places to travel to at least once in your lifetime!

However, that is not the only reason why I personally chose Fiji as my getaway. Imagine this beautiful island being your families native homeland! Yes, you got that right, Fiji Islands is my families native homeland where I have gotten to travel to my entire life.

Fun Fact - A Long & Complex History: Indian Fijians, sometimes referred to as Indo-Fijians, are inhabitants of Fiji who can trace their origin to various parts of India and the Indian subcontinent. In 1874, Fiji joined the British colonial empire. The first Indians arrived on coolie ships a few years later, in 1879, to work as indentured servants on British colonial authorities' sugarcane estates in Fiji. Approximately 60,000 Indians had been brought to Fiji by 1919, and they were given labor contracts and employment advertisements promising them the right to return or stay, own land, and live freely in Fiji once the five-year work contract period was up. Indo-Fijians made up approximately 50% of the entire Fijian population by the time the country attained independence from the British colonial power in 1970.

My family decided to remain in Fiji and they have been there since. Growing up, I would visit my family in Fiji multiple times a year and each year was a fulfilling and humbling experience. Fiji is a developed third world country, where it can sometimes give us a limited perspective on the world. Visiting a country like Fiji is not only about the beaches, and resorts but it's also about going into the towns and villages to get to know the friendly, warm, welcoming locals. My trips to Fiji have been nothing but eye-opening experiences that has broadened my understanding of cultures and ways of living life. Seeing the challenges that others have faced here on a daily basis has been extremely humbling and gave me a greater appreciation for what I have. It inspires me to take action and make a positive impact on the world which is why I showcase my experiences here and would encourage you to do the same hopefully one day! :)

Best Time to Travel to Fiji:

July-September (Best time to visit)

The months between July and September constitute high season in Fiji. The sun shines bright, warming the islands to daily temps that range from the mid-60s to the mid-80s. But keep in mind that this is the most popular and most expensive time to visit, so you'll see flocks of tourists forking over hundreds of dollars to soak in the Fijian rays. Since this is winter break for many Australians and New Zealanders, you might also spot a lot of families.

Key Events:

October

October is one of the short shoulder seasons in Fiji, coming right after the high season and right before the rainy season. Prices on hotels and flights should go down a bit, while daily temperatures remain high, ranging from the upper 60s to upper 80s.

Key Events:

  • Fiji Day (October)

  • Diwali (October)

  • The Rising of the Balolo (October-November)

November-April

November through April constitutes Fiji's wet season (or "typhoon season"), and the weather is characterized by high temperatures and short storms. But if you travel now, you'll save the most on airfare and accommodations. Temperatures, however, are at their annual peak and fluctuate between the low 70s and low 90s.

Key Events:

May-June

May and June are another short shoulder season during which you can visit Fiji without all the crowds. You could also score discounted airfare and hotel rates. Daytime temperatures range between the mid-60s and mid-80s, making beach-bumming perfectly hospitable.

Exploring the Best Things to Do, See, & Eat on your Getaway

Garden of the Sleeping Giant

Wander through one of Fiji's most spectacular attractions on the island filled with the world's most exotic plants, flowers, and tropical fruits. The Garden of the Sleeping Giant is one of the most well-known and breathtaking sights; just a few minutes north of Nadi, Fiji, at the base of the Nausori Highlands. This garden displays over 2000 various species of orchids and rare native plants. Begin your stroll through the well-designed pathways through the garden while enjoying a complimentary cup of tea, and end your stroll with receiving a yummy bowl of tropical fruits!

Fun Fact: If you look at the Sleeping Giant Mountain from a distance, it resembles a "giant" who appears to be laying on their back sleeping

Sleeping Giant Ziplining

If you are up for an adventure through a 35-acre eco-friendly adventure park, the Sleeping Giant Zipline is the place to go! It has a Jungle Safari, 2 waterfalls, and 7 zip lines. 20 minutes from Nadi, tucked up deep within the luscious green tropical rain forest of Fiji. During this surreal quality experience you'll soar like a bird through the jungle, over rivers, and past waterfalls.

Orchid Falls

The Orchid Waterfalls are a gorgeous collection of 4 stunning falls that are fed by warm tropical rainwater, and they are situated in the Sabeto Valley less than 30 minutes north of Nadi and Denarau. The falls are an aquatic paradise ideal for swimming, exploring, and relaxing. They are tucked away in a private region surrounded by untamed tropical jungle. You may see a variety of tropical fruit trees, vibrant butterflies, wild parrots in a riot of colors, and of course, the iridescent orchids that give the falls its name among the ancient trees encircled by lace ferns, jungle vines, and coffee plants. There is room for everyone because the swimming hole is about the same size as a backyard pool. Swim, dive, or, if you're feeling very daring, leap from the cliffs above. The maximum depth of the sea is only 2 meters, so proceed with caution. Even though the uphill jungle hike to the pools may make you sweat, the refreshing end is a fantastic treat. To see the waterfall, you have to pay a small hiking fee at the start of the hike. Luckily, the path is fully paved and should not be too difficult. A friendly guide will show you around and give you all of information you may need.

South Sea Cruises

Experience the island beauty of Fiji with South Sea Cruises' great selection of island resort connections and day cruises that have won numerous awards. A paradise with white sand beaches, woodland walks, and vibrant reefs is just a short distance from Denarau. My recommendations for islands and associated activities are South Sea Sailing around the South Sea Island, go sightseeing on the Mamanuca Islands Explorer, or take the full day to cruise the Castaway Island Resort. Then enjoy the day experiences such as swimming with Manta Rays or encounter snorkeling with sharks!

Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple

The three-part Sri Siva Subramaniya temple, located at the southern end of the main road through Nadi, Fiji, and the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, is a Hindu temple dedicated to many Hindu deities. The temple is renowned for its serene ambiance, elaborate carvings, vibrant celebrations, and Dravidian architecture. The temple, a striking structure in the center of Nadi City situated by the Nadi River, and is open to tourists. The temple, a towering colorful building with traditional Dravidian styling, is decorated with elaborate carvings that show several Hindu gods. Visitors are welcome to explore the temple's serene interior and take part in the vibrant Hindu festivals that are observed there.

I ask again... Why Fiji?

Besides the endless, gorgeous beaches that are perfect for relaxing, adventurous activities, and the delicious foods, Fiji is enriched with natural beauty, welcoming locals who are eager to share their culture with all visitors, and there is always something for everyone to enjoy. Visiting a third world country can be a life changing experience that teaches us valuable lessons about empathy, compassion, and the importance of making a difference. If you are prepared to experience all of the blissful benefits for an exotic South Pacific getaway, then Fiji is the place to go! BULA!

Consider Donating to a Greater Cause:

My family members and I are a part of an organization that my grandfather created called Samaaj Sewa of Fiji USA. They make an annual trip to Fiji to give children the opportunity & support to attain an education and a chance for a bright future. Your donation goes towards a number of expenses for the children and their families such as school supplies, uniforms, building fees, shoes, and other expenses. Any amount would allow these children to thrive in academic setting and would be greatly appreciated!
